How to Manage and Turn Off Live Photos on Your iPhone

Many users find managing Live Photos challenging, especially when it comes to organizing and preserving family memories. Fortunately, there are ways to manage and turn off this feature to make your photo library more manageable. Let's dive into why Live Photos can be troublesome and how to handle them effectively.

There are two main reasons why Live Photos are troublesome:

  1. Animation in Photos: When you view Live Photos, they are slightly moving, which can be distracting when you're expecting a normal picture.
  2. File Duplication: When you copy Live Photos to a folder on your computer, you end up with two files: a picture and a video. While your iPhone shows it as one item, your computer separates them, which can quickly become unmanageable.

Managing Live Photos

For those who have thousands of Live Photos, we generally recommend deleting the video part of the Live Photo. Some people prefer to use the video to get a better picture, but most find the extra files unnecessary.

There are two ways to shut off the Live Photo setting:

  1. In the Camera App:
    • Open your camera and look for the Live Photo icon at the top right. Make sure it’s off, which means there should be a line through it.
    • Be vigilant because every time you open the camera, the Live setting might turn on again. So, always check this icon before taking photos.
  2. In Your Settings:
    • Go to Settings and scroll down to Camera.
    • Select "Preserve Settings." Here, you’ll find an option for Live Photo. Turn this on to preserve the off setting, so it doesn’t automatically reset to Live Photo turned on.
    • This setting ensures that if you turn Live Photos off your camera, it stays off, even after closing and reopening the camera app.
